The Ease (and Enjoyment) of Keeping New Year’s Resolutions in Detroit!

January 15, 2019 | Detroit

I don’t actually make New Years’ Resolutions. One reason for that is that I like to think every day offers me the opportunity to make a change for the better—and living in Downtown Detroit makes that incredibly easy.

‘Eating Well’ is one of the most popular New Years’ Resolutions—and if you live in Downtown Detroit you definitely won’t find any reason to break this one! It seems like there is a new restaurant opening up almost every day, which makes eating well really easy! The most recent addition to our Downtown restaurant choices is San Morello in the Shinola Hotel. (I can actually see both from my loft windows.) “Inspired by the spirit and piazzas of Southern Italy and Sicily, San Morello is Chef Andrew Carmellini’s urban Italian neighborhood restaurant in Downtown Detroit serving authentic, wood-fired dishes, pizzas and house-made pastas using local, seasonal ingredients.” Remember how your Mom told you to eat your vegetables and you thought she was nuts? Turns out, Mom was right. At least when it comes to San Morello’s Butternut Squash, with Pistachio Pesto and Orange Mostarda, a Southern Italian Dip served with Pane Siciliano. Or their Pumpkin Agnolotti, with Amaretti and Mustard Fruits. And you know you can’t go wrong following that up with My Grandmother’s Ravioli. ‘Nuf said. It’s Grandma’s, so it’s going to be good and good for you.

Another popular New Years’ Resolutions is to ‘Get Fit.’ One of the biggest reasons people break this resolution is because it isn’t convenient to work out or because they get bored. Living in Downtown Detroit eliminates both of these issues! I can’t count all the workout options I have within a 5-minute walk from my loft: the first being in my building, where I have an assortment of cardio and weight-lifting options that I don’t even have to go outside to put to use! I also have Pure Barre Detroit just around the corner from my loft. “Pure Barre is a collection of 45 to 50-minute total body workouts. At the core of our technique we use a thoughtful series of low impact, isometric movements that are designed to produce results. You’ll use the ballet Barre and other light equipment as you move through class, focusing on different areas of your body. Your muscles will shake. You’ll get stronger with each class. And ultimately, you’ll rise above who you were yesterday. Precise. Proud. Balanced. Passionate.”

And who doesn’t resolve to ‘Stay Hydrated’ after working out? Again, living in Downtown Detroit makes this incredibly easy! And along with long-time locals you will adhere to out of habit, there’s always a new ‘watering-hole’ opening up Downtown. Like The Elephant Room, with their signature drink, the Babar! And there’s also the Brass Rail Pizza Bar where—with 52 beers on draft—you can try a new one each week and keep your resolution for a whole year!
