5 of Detroit’s Hottest New Restaurants

August 21, 2017 | Apartment Living

As apartment tips go, there are few better than seeking accommodations near the best food and libations. This is no easy feat in Detroit, where top-shelf eateries are practically a dime a dozen. That said, if you’re on the hunt for the latest and greatest in culinary contributions to the Motor City, here are a few of the hottest new restaurants to visit.

1. Narrow Way Cafe and Shop

Summer, winter, or any other season, there’s no better way to kick off your day than with a steamy, dreamy cuppa Joe. This addition to Livernois Avenue offers up Zingerman’s coffee, as well as confectionary delights from Avalon International Breads.

If you’re not part of the coffee crowd, never fear – you can get a sweet dose of vitamins from one of the many smoothies on the menu. And if the fare isn’t quite enough to tame a rumbling tummy, simply head next door to Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles for more substantial bites.

2. Atomic Chicken Detroit

The name is enough to pique your interest, but just wait until you see the menu, featuring items like BBQ wings and fried chicken sandwiches, with levels of spice ranging from “plain Jane” to “Motor City hot”. The beauty of downtown apartment living in Detroit is the proximity to foodie gems like Atomic Chicken.

3. Royale with Cheese

The movie “Pulp Fiction” popularized the French version of the Big Mac, and restaurateurs ran with it. Nods to the cinematic inspiration abound, most notably in the form of a wall mural depicting actors John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in the scene from the movie where they discuss the burger in question.

As for the vittles, first-timers will probably want to try the titular menu item, which features smoked brisket, creamy cheese, coleslaw, caramelized onions, corn relish, and avocado for a mouthwatering medley of utter awesomeness. What else is on the menu? Believe it or not, this restaurant also features healthier fare, including vegetarian options like falafel patties. Whatever you get, you can wash it down with a creamy custard shake.

4. Wright & Co

If you can’t decide between a fancy feast or something more cazh, you’re sure to hit a happy medium with this restaurant a couple blocks up from The Lofts of Merchant’s Row. Former Wolfgang Puck chef Marc Djozlija mans the grill, so to speak, offering a brief but daring menu that features snacks like pork belly sliders, plates that range from Maine crab cakes to Szechuan sirloin steak, and desserts like strawberry malt cake. Meanwhile, at the bar, partner Dave Kwiatkowski slings signature craft cocktails.

5. Detroit Fleat

If what you want is a moveable feast, Detroit Fleat delivers with a rotating slate of food trucks designed to deliver a veritable smorgasbord of delectable options. There are four permanent fixtures at this Ferndale hotspot – Delectabowl, Drifter Coffee, Mac Shack, and Pita Post – as well as an open kitchen serving tacos and boozes galore. The rest of the lineup changes weekly. If you chose downtown loft living with an eye toward taking advantage of vast options for tasty chow, it doesn’t get much better than a slew of food trucks parked at one location.
