The 7 Best Valentine’s Dates in Detroit & the Metro Area

Our last post was full of powerful but fairly generic advice about how to set up an intense romantic evening in your apartment. But what if your partner isn’t the kind who wants to stay in? Well, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered there, too. Here are our ideas for the best romantic Valentine’s dates around the D.

Open Outdoors
We suggest getting your warm clothes on and starting at the Campus Martius skating rink. Whether you’re skating yourselves, or just having a walk and enjoying the scenery. Alternatively, Belle Isle — a famous Spring and Summer destination — is just as beautiful, in a very different way, in winter. It’s worth a hike-through, especially with a special someone on your arm. Finally, the Rouge River Gateway Trail is a beautiful scenic trail that has several pick-up points, so you can have a walk of 2, 3, 7, 10, or more miles depending on how much you love the trail.

Retreat to Warmth
Once you’ve gotten your cheeks rosy, head somewhere warm for a nip of something. For the pinnacle of class, you can’t beat Iridescence in the Motor City Casino. If you’re looking for something with a bit more old-timey, rustic feel (but still high on the romance factor), try the London Chophouse. Or if you prefer the swanky jazz routine, head over to Cliff Bells — just don’t get caught underdressed!

Take In a Show
Now that you’re warm inside and out, head on out again to find a Valentine’s show to remember. We suggest the Fox Theatre‘s Neo Soul show if you’re a old-school music type, or catching William Singe at the Majestic if you’re more of an R&B person. If you prefer a musical to ‘just’ music, the Detroit Opera House is putting on a live-action take on The Lion King that has gotten rave reviews.

Eat a Great Meal
There’s nothing like taking in some great culture and then following it up with some great grub. For a top-tier but relaxed dinner experience, go for Chartreuse. If you’d prefer a classically romantic steakhouse dinner, Michael Symon’s Roast is the place to go. But for our money, you can’t get more romantic than Italian, and you can’t get any more Italian than Giovanni’s Ristorante. Bring your appetite!

Dance It Off
At this point, many couples might decide to call it a night — but if you’re not among them and you feel the drive to dance off Giovani’s tiramisu or Michael Symon’s French toast crème brulee, you’ve got options. The high-standard Delux Lounge spins riffs on rock, pop, funk, and more. If you’re looking for more of a darker, neo-Gothic/industrial kind of romance, Leland City Club will provide all that and more. And if what you need is a modern dance club, Bleu is the place to be.

Happy Valentine’s Dates, everybody!
