4 Days + 4 Stages = An Incredible Weekend in Detroit (For FREE!)

This past weekend was Labor Day, which for many means a backyard BBQ—but for approximately ¼ of a million people, it means the chance to ‘jazz’ it up a little…and if you happen to live in a Downtown Detroit luxury loft, it’s actually the sum of the two—an international music festival, the Detroit Jazz Fest, (complete with food trucks, offering lots of tasty treats, including barbeque) in your backyard!

Incredible performances could be heard at the 38th Annual Detroit Jazz Festival (presented by Quicken Loans) on four stages: JP Morgan Chase Main Stage in Campus Martius Park; and the Carhartt Ampitheatre Stage, the Absopure Water Front Stage, and the Wayne State University Pyramid Stage in Hart Plaza.  Of course, all the windows I have facing Woodward and offering incredible views also offer me the chance to open them wide and hear the incredible performances throughout the weekend!

On Friday night, there was Herbie Hancock.  Saturday kicked off with the MSBOA Showcase, featuring Northview HS, Jackson HS, Warren Mott HS and the University of Michigan Combo Showcase (which was the perfect prelude to a Wolverines win later that day). On Sunday there was the Mack Avenue Records All-Star Jam Session.  And it would be simply wonderful to have a case of the Mondays every day if Regina Carter was always doing ‘Simply Ella.’

And while it would have been incredible to hear Esperanza Spalding (again—since I am lucky enough to have also seen her at Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit) as the special guest with Karriem Riggins doing ‘Music with a Purpose,’ improvised weather is another player in the Labor Day weekend in Michigan….

But when Hart Plaza and the Detroit Riverfront is just a short stroll from your Downtown Detroit loft, you can make it home in a matter of minutes—knowing the city you call home has incredible local musicians performing at local venues just outside your front door all year long. And, with the Detroit Jazz Fest offering so many wonderful acts every year, hosting ‘headliners’ and lifting up local performers, you can start looking forward to the next Labor Day Weekend’s lineup!
