Get it ‘Right’ on Opening Day in Detroit!

Detroit Tigers Opening Day 2016

On Friday, April 8th, Tigers Fans celebrate Detroit’s Home Opener. The weather forecasters may be predicting the coldest Opening Day on record, but Our Boys plan on throwing some heat this season with five right-handed starting pitchers. If that sounds familiar, it should: We had five righties in 2012, when we swept the New York Yankees to win the AL pennant in Detroit and then go on to the World Series….

As Yogi Berra said, “It’s like déjà vu all over again….” Okay. It may be a little ironic to quote an iconic Yankee, but I think he’d agree with me that ‘blog-writing is 90% physical and the other half is mental.’

On the other hand, figuring out where to go on Opening Day is a no-brainer. Which is good, because “you can’t think and hit at the same time.”

So here’s my starting lineup so you don’t have to think about how you are going to hit it out of the park on Opening Day in Detroit!

Starting Pitcher: The ‘rightie’ way to start the game—and celebrate the Home Opener—is with a true champion. A winner that you know you’ll still have in your roster for awhile and one that’s going to be a proven MLB All-Star. So plan to sport a tee-shirt from Down with Detroit, a clothing company that’s also a hometown hero, as your uniform for the day. [Did you know that the first baseball team to wear uniforms was the New York Knickerbockers? Yep, on April 4th, 1849.]

Catcher: This guy takes a beating—up-and-down, up-and-down all game (and day) long…just like you’ll be when you’re jumping out of your seat to cheer on the Tigers! So you want to start out at Home Plate fully fueled for the day. I’m starting my Home Opener in a Very Berry good way right downstairs from my Detroit apartment at the Hudson Café, with friends and neighbors from The Lofts of Merchants Row. Oh, and if you live in the Lofts of Merchants Row, The Hudson Café also delivers…right to your door! But even if you’re just visiting and perhaps considering moving Downtown, this is the place to properly ‘manage’ the way you start your day!

First Base: Always a hit, the annual 97.1 The Ticket Opening Day Block Party in Grand Circus Park starts at 10 a.m.. This position requires power and coordination, and you’ll have both being right across the street from Comerica Park with live music from Brena—and you can “keep the party going with DJ Ryan Richards, who will be spinning on the Music Stage after the game.” Enjoy ballpark food, BBQ, beverages, and Big Screen and multiple TVs in the View and Brew Tent, along with interactive games and Opening Day merchandise. Admission is FREE!

Second Base: “Come hear the Roar” with Paws and Fans at Harry’s Detroit! Be a part of ‘The Show,’ with the Live Broadcast by 93.9 The River, Music by Painted White, DJ Just Nick, and more!  With so much going on, this party will keep you nimble and let you do a quick turn to Comerica Park in plenty of time to make the play. The party starts at 7 a.m. and it is FREE ADMISSION!

Third Base: Have a “clear and near view” of Comerica Park at The Park Bar with “Two floors and 48 beers on draft! Motor City Brewing Works, Shorts, Dark Horse, Atwater, and more this Starting Lineup is a Winner!! There will be Live Music ALL Day and GoGo’s Hawaiian Street Food will be available with a limited menu. Cost = $0. Experience = Priceless!

Short Stop: You’ll have the best field position at the Detroit Beer Company Opening Day Party. Just a block away from Comerica you’ll be right where all the action is! You’ll also want quick feet and good hands because this Opening Day Party will keep you ‘hopping’ as they offer 9+ taps of the craft beer (including an American Pale Ale Baseball Beer) they brew in-house and covers two floors and an outdoor tent! They’ll have a full menu and the freshest brewed beer in town and you can get one of their 20 oz. craft beers for $6. There’s NO COVER, and while this party will keep you in the field from 9 a.m. until the end of the ‘game,’ consider visiting the ‘Clubhouse’ by joining the DBC Mug Club: you get your own mug, discounts on retail items, and exclusive invitations to events like the Mug Club Party (where members get their own mugs, discounts on beer, free swag, and annual parties where the signing bonus is free food and beer)!

Left Field: A lot of Detroiters have already experienced the frequent ‘pull to’ Firebird Tavern. They’re “bringing the tent back, Detroit Sports 1051 is broadcasting live and [they’re] sponsored by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee WhiskeyRed BullMiller Lite and Three Olives Vodka.” They “open at 9 a.m. and will be going all the way until last call”!

Center Field: This position has more grass to cover, and the Detroit Home Opener Festival has you covered with over 15,000 sq ft of HEATED tent. After you’ve positioned yourself correctly (no problem with their lineup of live entertainment), you’ll need agility and a good arm for all their Full Bars and Food Truck Rally. When you hit this party on 440 Madison St, just like the player in this position, you get a clear view of the entire Opening Day field! From 9 a.m. on, they’ll have you singing, “Put me in Coach, I’m ready to play today…look at me, I can be Centerfield”!

Right Field: This position requires a strong arm, and you’ll be giving yours a power workout at The Town Pump Tavern’s Opening Day Tent Party where you get Three Parties On One Corner with Full Bars (including a McClure’s Bloody Mary Bar and hot coffee drinks!) and delish Bar-BQ! The ‘Tent Party’ opens at 8 a.m., with TVs inside and outside and DJ Zig Zag  and with DJ Ric-Nasty spinning!

Designated Hitter: Since you only get this position in American League Parks, why not score with something you can only get in Detroit…Coneys from American Coney Island AND Lafayette Coney Island! Note, we say American and Lafayette, not American or Lafayette…!!!!

Closer: This position requires a ‘cool’ mindset…and there is no cooler place where you can nail down the night than ‘Opening Day in The BELT,’ the art-filled alley between Broadway and Library Street. They’ll have music by DJs Frankie Banks and Dante Lasalle, Beer, Cocktails, and Food before, during, and after the game so you can close out the night with a walk off homerun and sudden victory!

Although when it comes to Opening Day in Detroit, I’ve got to go back to Yogi who got it ‘right’ when he said, “It ain’t over until it’s over.” Kid Rock pretty much summed it up too when he said, “There ain’t no party like a Detroit party.”  In Downtown Detroit, with ALL the great places to go, Opening Day and every day can go into extra innings and end with a WIN!
