New on the Beer Scene in Detroit: Eastern Market Brewing Company

Detroit is no stranger to cool brews, and even cooler drinking establishments. With the city experiencing a financial rebound, new investments, and a growing influx of young professionals in recent years, it only makes sense that the brew scene would see some newcomers to the market.

Enter Eastern Market Brewing Company, established in 2016 and set to have an official opening in mid-October (although the opening preview is already underway). Located at 2515 Riopelle St. in the Eastern Market District, this “intensely local brewery” takes the best of Detroit’s strong traditions, pairs them with community spirit, and throws in everything local (brews, snacks, and talent) to create an intoxicating gem of a pub that’s sure to become an instant classic.

Eastern Market Brewing Company was developed by partners Dayne Bartscht, Devin Drowley, and Paul Hoskin with a mission to share community, camaraderie, and craft, continuing the “tradition of craft beer in the city of Detroit”. On tap will be a number of classics, as well as a unique collection of craft brews that feature the flavors of the area, utilizing fresh, locally-sourced ingredients found around Eastern Market. Head brewer Hazen Schumacher brings plenty of experience to the table with stints at Atwater, Bell’s, and Brew Detroit in his back pocket.

For the official opening, Eastern Market Brewing Company plans to feature a menu of 9-12 beers with names inspired by the area. Anyone attending the opening preview can expect to find a Belgian pale ale, a hefeweizen, an IPA, an Oktoberfest beer, and a sweet stout on tap. Also available are market-sourced snacks.

As for the ambience, there’s plenty to be found in this two-story industrial conversion, which formerly served as a meat-packing facility. The completed taproom takes full advantage of tall ceilings and large windows to make the space feel enormous. When paired with long tables and benches reminiscent of a German beer hall, the overall atmosphere is open, airy, and communal, inviting patrons to share a pint and make new friends.

However, the taproom is just the tip of the iceberg for the team behind this fun, new brewery. Planning for the second floor and rooftop spaces is already underway, and the trio behind Eastern Market Brewing Company recently purchased the building next door, gaining an additional 1,300 square feet of space with plans to expand their brewing operation. That’s not all, though. Bartscht and Hoskin are working on a food truck called Elephant Shack (to tie in with the brewery’s elephant logo).

Area chef Jonathan Kung is already onboard to create a bar food menu featuring international influences. The team plans to set up food prep in the second building and have the entire operation up and running in 2019. Although the food truck is already finished, inspection and licensing are still required before it becomes operational.

Eastern Market Brewing Company may not be fully functional just yet, but it’s already got the makings of a great watering hole. As the sign on the wall says, “We’re always brewing and you’re always welcome.” It may soon become a local hangout where everyone knows your name.
