Fixing Detroit in 40 days

Repairing 40 homes in 40 days. That’s the goal of Tim Addy, founder of Handyman Ministries, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods. The organization is taking donations to help fix up the homes, operating almost entirely through volunteers to make a positive difference in Detroit and beyond.

The project’s genesis was more than 400 Detroit churches and Christian organizations gathering volunteers to repair homes free of charge. At least 30 of the houses are located within the city limits, offering Detroiters a chance to improve their homes without strapping their budgets.

Addy’s ambitious mission, coupled with the help of a plethora of dedicated volunteers, is inspiring, demonstrating that a little dedication and kindness can go a long way toward positively impacting the lives of others.

If this sounds like an opportunity to showcase your skills as a carpenter, painter or just helpful volunteers, go to the Believe in Detroit site’s volunteer page and sign up to help. Addy is looking for any kind of skilled tradesmen – plumbers, electricians, roofers – and non-skilled laborers to help out in  other areas, including running a barbecue and general cleanup. No matter your area of expertise, the group will find a spot for anyone willing to participate.

We encourage anyone with a charitable spirit to sign up, as you’ll no doubt see and feel tremendous gratitude from city residents who can’t afford or don’t have the time to do many home repairs themselves. There’s a good chance you’ll learn a new skill and meet like-minded individuals, and, of all, you’ll be giving back to Detroit, something we can all support.

  1. Timothy Addy says:

I like what you did with this. I have not had much time to upload pictures from the 40 in 40 nor follow up on anything. I’ve been going at it 18 hours a day since before it started. We have about two weeks left but we have big plans for after the 40. Thank you
