Spending your summer helping Detroit

Demolition. Construction. Painting. Planting. Volunteering. They’re all projects taken on by volunteers of Summer in the City Detroit, a group of inspired metro Detroiters helping to connect volunteers with opportunities around the city.

The folks work with more than 40 organizations around the city, including nonprofits, schools and neighborhood associations, to provide a plethora of opportunities that will appeal to any do-gooder. Organizers make it easy to get involved too, with six carpool sites around metro Detroit to get everyone to the site and working together.

The official summer and volunteering opportunities runs from June 23 to August 14, 9 am to 2 pm. The short days are designed to be convenient for all involved and volunteers are asked to be available for the full day. At the carpool sites you’ll choose from a variety of activities too, and with more than 100 volunteers a day, you’ll meet new metro Detroiters wanting to help out like you.

Everything you’ll do helps Detroit – from applying a fresh coat of paint to provide an updated look to buildings and facilities to planting flowers and landscaping or even mentoring youth who are looking for more positive influences in their lives.

At the end of the summer, your hours are tabulated and you’re sent a certificate of appreciation noting the time you spent helping the city. And on days you can’t go out and assist, SITC’s blog can keep you updated on the many projects organized.

Overall, nearly 3,000 volunteers have gone through SITC’s doors since 2002, logging more than 55,000 people-hours improving Detroit.

So if you’re looking to volunteer in the city, call them up or swing by the office between 9 am and 2 pm this summer. There’s never a shortage of work to be done, and always room for more helping hands.
