When I moved to Downtown Detroit, I did it so I could easily explore places that were new to me. I wanted to immerse myself in city life, and being able to walk to all the places that I wanted to spend my time more than made up for the fact that I have to drive 35 miles out of Detroit for my job….

I’ve lived in my Downtown Detroit Loft for eight years…and I still haven’t run out of new places I want to check out.

That’s because there is always a new restaurant, bar, business, or exhibit for me to ‘discover.’

And, yes, because I live in Downtown Detroit, I am often the first of those of my friends who live outside the city to ‘check into’ a new hotspot.

And living at The Lofts of Merchants Row gives me even more opportunities to earn my ‘street cred’ in the Motor City since The Lofts of Merchants Row hosts regular “Resident Events.”

Just last night I got to swing by the newly opened SavannahBlue on Times Square which offers “Contemporary Northern Soul food– fresh ingredients prepared with Southern flavors, presented with Detroit style.”

We gathered in the bar and lounge area, where you can get a group together at a big table or snag a sofa near the piano. SavannahBlue prepared an incredible array of appetizers (which were provided by The Lofts of Merchants Row and pretty much turned out to be my dinner because there were so many and they were so delish that I pretty much abused the term ‘appetizer’!).

We had platters of the House Dry-Rub Wings, which are presented with Garlic Molasses Barbecue Sauce (Yes. Garlic, Molasses, Barbecue. Think ‘presented’ as in a work of art…). We also had “The Boss,” a Flat Bread loaded with Pepperoni, Sausage, and Bacon (ALL the MEATS!) and a Robust Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, and Fresh Herbs. There was also “The Annie,” a Flat Bread with a ‘softer’ and ‘southern’ side that layers Greens, Chards, Spinach, Scallions and Goat Cheese on a Roasted Garlic Sauce. And then there was the SB Barbecue Chicken Flat Bread with Caramelized Onions and a sweet BBQ Sauce. But while I could go on and on about this last dish, SavannahBlue pretty much sums up not only it, but their whole vibe when they say “hospitality is our special sauce.”

And, if you’re thinking about checking out SavannahBlue for yourself and wondering about libations to accompany your celebration, let me just say that while the cocktail menu was comprehensive, the hands-down (or bottoms-up) choice was the Pear Martini.

You can also get full dinner service at this new restaurant: I personally would start with the Roasted Sweet Potato Bisque, with Parsnip Purée, Crispy Leeks, Garden Vegetable Stock, Touch of Cream,
and a Hint of Pink Peppercorn. I am torn between the Yam and Arugula Salad, with Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Caramelized Onion, and Crème Mustard Vinaigrette OR the SavannahBlue Chop with Romaine, Kale, Egg, Bacon, Scallion, Cheddar, Tomato, Barbecue Ranch, Corn Bread Croutons And Pulled Chicken. Pulled Chicken and Barbecue Ranch?!?! Okay. You had me at Corn Bread Croutons! (And, by torn, let’s just be honest. I mean I am going to order both.) I can’t recommend an entrée. Seriously, you want  me to choose between Braised Oxtail with Wisconsin Cheddar-Engaged Risotto, Pan-Roasted Green Beans and Crispy Root Vegetable; the Motor City Boil, Mussels Steamed in Cajun Broth, with Fresh Cobb Corn, Red Potato, Shrimp And Sausage; the “House Burger,” Savannahblue’s Brisket-Blend Burger with Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Onion And Garlic Smear; and the SavannahBlue Fried Chicken, with Maple Pecan Sauce, Collard Greens and Roasted Sweet Potato Purée?!?! Yeah. That’s not going to happen. The choice, I mean. Because when I go there for dinner it is ALL going to happen.  And while I am curious about the Creamy Sweet Potato Cheese Cake, served with Candied Pecans (Pecan Pie is one of my Faves and Cheesecake is one of my Mom’s specialties), I will save room for that and find room for the Cast-Iron Peach Berry Cobbler with Peaches and Mixed Berries Bathed In Juniper Maple Syrup and topped with Streusel (because my Mom made a cobbler every night for us while I was growing up). And, again, okay, I am going to have both.

But I can do that.  I can get (Southern) Comfort (Food), Incredible Conversation, Cocktails and Check-In at a Detroit Hot Spot before so many of my friends because I don’t have to make SavannahBlue a one-time destination.  The Lofts of Merchants Row Resident Event already got me there once and a tasty sampling of their menu, and because I live where I live, I can go there again and again….

The Lofts of Merchants Row Residents and NEW Residents moving into the Lofts of Merchants Row Expansion in our Renovation of The Valpey and The Pepper Shoe Building at 1413 Woodward will also enjoy all the check-outs and check-ins that come with living in a Luxury Loft in Downtown Detroit. There are still select studio apartments available for June Move-In!
